This week, Glasgow, Scotland, will host the 92nd INTERPOL General Assembly<\/a> from November 4-7, 2024. The delegates from 195 member countries have gathered to discuss critical issues in global policing and take decisions which will define the future of the organization. The assembly is the highest governing body of INTERPOL and meets every year to decide on critical policies, resource allocation, and steer the direction of international law enforcement collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and INTERPOL President Ahmed Naser Al-Raisi addressed the General Assembly as it convened, promising an atmosphere of global unity and cooperation. After ten years of leadership, J\u00fcrgen Stock will leave, concluding his second and final mandate. A tough selection procedure has come up with Valdecy Urquiza from Brazil as the candidate recommended by the Executive Committee. Approval of Urquiza from the Assembly would bring INTERPOL a new era in its leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the meeting, the Assembly will elect a new Secretary General, but it will also vote for nine new members on the Executive Committee, a committee that is at the helm of guiding the strategic initiatives of INTERPOL. The new Committee members will shape policies as new global security challenges arise, as current members finish their three-year terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interactive Panels and Key Topics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, there will be four discussion panels where various initiatives will be launched aimed at finding solutions to international law enforcement’s most challenging dilemmas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biometric Frontline Capabilities:<\/strong> As technology is continuously improved, biometrics became the indispensable resource for identification and security matters. The panel will dwell on ways of improving INTERPOL’s biometric tools and bringing them into the policeman’s daily work so that worldwide law enforcement agencies easily identify and trace criminals in real-time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI and the Future of Policing Artificial intelligence transforms almost every industry, and policing is no exception. This session explores how to help with crime prevention and analysis and support a rapid response through AI, while touching on ethical considerations and data privacy as this balance is crucial between technological advancement and public trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sustaining Multilateralism <\/strong>\u2013 An Integrated Global Security Architecture: Transnational threats require a coordinated approach. This panel will take a look at how countries should work better together to find a single framework of security on which terrorism, cybercrime, and other transnational threats can be responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Leadership in a Changing Future of Law Enforcement To act purposefully during times of flux is to be vital. This session would focus on the adaptive, culturally oriented leaders who are enhancing skills required for the new complexities in law enforcement in the 21st century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other Issues and Voting Agenda<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assembly talks about many other prime issues apart from governance and data processing in conjunction with global partnerships. With such powerful connections being made on governments’, the private sector’s, or other international organizations’ lines, governance and data issues are going to be sharply discussed by INTERPOL to make sure agreed practices that protect security as much as privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delegates will also vote on INTERPOL’s 2025 program of activities and budget, determining the financial framework for the plans and goals of the organization in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
