The competition dates back to 1947<\/strong>, first held in Edinburgh before moving permanently to Glasgow in 1948. Nearly 80 years on, it’s grown into the largest pipe band competition in the world, regularly drawing bands from Scotland, Ireland, England, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who Competes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bands compete across multiple grades, from Grade 1 (the elite tier) down through the amateur and juvenile grades. Grade 1 in particular is the one to watch \u2014 it’s a genuinely tiny, elite field each year, so the standard on Saturday is extraordinarily high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
