The Great Scottish Run is one of many runs which take place each year in Glasgow, Scotland. It is usually organized on the weekend, at the beginning of October. For the second year running, the event is organized around many different fun events including the half marathon, the 10-kilometer race, fun runs for the entire family and fun running for kids which should cater both professional sportspeople and simply running enthusiasts. Running across such wonderfully picturesque routes that lie almost at the center of the Glasgow City passing through landmarks such as Geoge Square, River Clyde in the city and many parks scattered across the city.

History and Significance

The Great Scottish Run has seen a steady increase in numbers and is becoming more and more popular with the populace. The event is recorded since decades and over the years it has not only provided a platform of healthy living but also provided a helpful hand in many philanthropic activities where a good number of runners have run for charity.

The Event

Lasting for a period of two days, the weekend begins with some junior races, and the family mile on Saturday to get the kids and the parents active in these two children friendly events. Such initiatives are aimed at reaching out to people of all ages, children and the elderly with these healthy fitness and recreational activities. And the highlight of the day comes on Sunday, featuring the two main races of the half marathon and the 10 km. Both races start at George Square and detour around the city passing some landmarks including St Vincent Street, Glasgow Green and Kingston Bridge. Of particular note about the half marathon is the number of statues, tower blocks and parks with the river Clyde in the background.

People started running some marathons with the help of live bands, pipers and bustling crowds during the whole course of an event. Thus, the day turned out not only to be marathonic, but also bright, cheerful and motivating as well. Last but not the least, every marathon has its finish line, and the one in this particular run was at Glasgow Green, presumably the centre of it all where runners got to bask in all their hard work.

Community and Charity

One of the focal points in regard to the Great Scottish Run is that it supports the raising of funds for the charity. Over the years, they have managed to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for various activities ranging from the local to global charities including cancer research, child focused programs and mental health campaigns. This fact explains why some of the participants come to make the race with portrait pictures of their deceased family members or other charity organizations, which makes the event all the more deeper and motivating as well.

Road Restrictions and Its Management

A large number of participants in the event necessitates that there will be blocked roads over the weekend at most localities. Motorists commuting the city within its central parts as central Glasgow during the race and the roads used for the race are ‘prohibited’ to all traffic, hence advising the drivers to be ready for other routes as well as public transport.

The Great Scottish Run is no simply a race – it is the party of Glasgow embracing active lifestyle, community, and charity. For both experienced marathoners or for one event only, this event offers great fun for those taking part.
