The Isle of Rum is a part of Inner Hebrides in Scotland, that has recently been labelled the UK’s first International Dark Sky Sanctuary, joining just 21 others around the world.Such a recognition really highlights the concern with which this island is being careful to retain clean dark night skies without any light pollution from artificial light. With a total population of only 40, not much human-made illumination would impact observing celestial beauty.
Visitors to Rum can experience something unique in the astronomical world. The isolation and naturally dark skies of the island provide the perfect setting for viewing constellations, meteor showers, and even the Northern Lights if one is lucky. Work by the Isle of Rum Community Trust and NatureScot in achieving this status includes all island lighting being dark sky-friendly and holding educational events for both local and visiting residents.
Future plans enhance the stargazing experience further with proposals for an observing tower and an all-sky camera and weather station to allow global online viewing.
