Glasgow Shanty Day 2026: A Celebration of Songs of the Sea aboard the Tall Ship Glenlee

Glasgow Shanty Day 2026: A Celebration of Songs of the Sea aboard the Tall Ship Glenlee

Glasgow will soon be hosting another exciting event with Glasgow Shanty Day 2026, which is scheduled to take place on 12th September. The festival is organized on the historical ship named ‘Tall Ship Glenlee’ and within the Riverside Museum, promising to offer a day packed with shanties, music, performances, workshops, and family activities.

The festival is organized by the Glasgow Shanty Crew and provides an opportunity for shanty groups and folk music fans to celebrate shanties – songs performed on ships and boats during sailing times. From the early shows until the evening concert, there are events arranged that cater to all ages of people.

Glasgow Shanty Day 2026 at the Tall Ship Glenlee

There could not be a more appropriate place to hold a festival celebrating seafaring music than the Tall Ship Glenlee, which stands permanently alongside the Riverside Museum.

As a day-long festival lasting from 11:30 AM to 10:15 PM, Glasgow Shanty Day is not a concert but an event that will include both scheduled performances and interactive activities, allowing participants to listen, learn and take part.

In addition, the location of the festival among the Tall Ship and the Riverside Museum makes the festival part of Glasgow’s important maritime area.

Live Shanty Music and Guest Performers

A major attraction of Glasgow Shanty Day 2026 is its diverse line-up of performers. This year’s artistes include:

  • Tripple
  • Muldoon’s Picnic
  • Morgan’s Men
  • The Sea Word
  • Tom & Neil McDermott
  • The Dunblane Shanty Crew
  • The Salty Scrimshaws
  • Joss Cameron
  • The St Andrew’s Shanty Crew
  • Voicemale
  • Vocabelles
  • The Yoker Minstrels

The line-up brings together established shanty crews, vocal groups and individual performers, offering different interpretations of traditional and contemporary maritime songs.

With multiple performers taking part throughout the day, the festival is expected to maintain a varied musical programme from morning through evening.

What to Expect at Glasgow Shanty Day

Glasgow Shanty Day is more than a series of live music performances. The planned programme includes activities designed to involve families, music enthusiasts and visitors who may be new to the shanty tradition.

Shanty Workshop

Another aspect of the overall programme is the shanty workshop, which will offer participants the chance to examine the vocal history of sea songs. The additional workshop is scheduled for 21st August 2026 and will be conducted by Glasgow Voicemale.

Those participating in the August workshop will be asked to participate in the evening concert scheduled for 12th September.

Children’s Craft Table

Younger visitors can take part in maritime-themed creative activities at the children’s craft table. The activity adds a family-friendly element to the festival and provides children with an alternative way to engage with the nautical theme.

Singaround

A singaround is yet another significant aspect of the event. While a standard performance on the stage involves a formal atmosphere for the performer,a singaround is much more informal in terms of the fact that the singers get an opportunity to share their songs with other participants.

The Maritime Setting of the Riverside Museum

One of the well-known museums associated with transport and social history in Glasgow is the Riverside Museum. The museum’s placement next to the River Clyde makes it even more suitable for the maritime music performance.

The historical ship named Glenlee will further add to the historic value of the event. Hence, those who attend Glasgow Shanty Day will be able to enjoy live musical performances in a very historical environment.

Also, the surroundings of the location make the event suitable for those who would like to visit some cultural sites along with live music.

Why Shanty Festivals Continue to Attract Audiences

Sea shanties have become increasingly popular again lately, in part due to their unique rhythm and communal nature. Sea shanties have roots that are closely connected to the work performed by sailors; specifically to the songs they would sing to coordinate heavy work on board ships.

Shanty festivals provide an opportunity to keep the tradition alive and to offer a modern take on it to the public. Glasgow Shanty Day is just one of the examples showing how this type of music can engage people who are not necessarily specialists in folk traditions.

A Full Day of Music and Family Entertainment

This year’s 2026 event is designed to be a full day event from 11:30 AM to 10:15 PM, which enables the programme to include workshops, activities for the children, performance, singing and entertainment in the evening.

This structure of the event means that people can come and participate in selected parts of the programme or can enjoy the whole day of the festival.

The evening concert should prove to be an appropriate ending for the event, especially considering that participants from the August Glasgow Voicemale workshop have been invited for the performance.
